Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Workshop on Urban Environment and Energy

Highlight: Scientific and Technical Publishing on Urban Environment and Energy

This session is based on Dr. Chen’s and Stathopoulos’ experience as editors of international journals such as Elsevier, the journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, and Building and Environment. In this session the entire publication process -from submission to the final disposition of a paper- will be demystified. Peer review processes with its difficulties will be analyzed. Useful bibliographic parameters, including the impact factor, will be presented and discussed. Helpful hints regarding the publication process will also be provided. This session will be highly beneficial to post-graduate students, researchers, and junior Assistant Professors who often struggle with their journal publications and make regretful but totally avoidable mistakes.

Dr. Ted Stathopoulos received his Civil Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece and both his M.E.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario. He is currently Professor at the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering of Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. His research in the area of wind effects on buildings and their codification has been influential in the development of codes and standards around the world. He has an extensive publication record with more than 500 articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He is a member of the ASCE 7 Committee on Minimum Wind Loads. He is a professional engineer registered in Québec, Ontario and in Greece; he is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and its Structural Engineering Institute. He is the Editor of the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics.

He has been appointed Distinguished Professor in Building Physics, Urban Physics and Wind Engineering by the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands (2015-2023) and Guest Professor by the Tokyo Polytechnic University, Japan (2008-2013). He has received an Honorary Doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2011); and another one from the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands (2015).

Prof. Qingyan “Yan” Chen earned his B.Eng. from Tsinghua University and M.Eng. and Ph.D. from the Delft University of Technology. He worked as a Research Scientist at ETH-Zurich, a Project Manager for TNO, and Assistant and Associate Professor at MIT. Before joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he was James G. Dwyer Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Building and Environment.

Prof. Chen's current research topics include indoor environment, aircraft cabin environment, and energy-efficient, healthy, and sustainable building design and analysis. He has published three books, six papers in book chapters, and over 470 journal and conference papers, and has been invited to deliver more than 180 lectures internationally.

Prof. Chen received several technical paper and poster awards and Distinguished and Exceptional Service Awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and CAREER award from the National Science Foundation in the United States. He has also received the Willis J. Whitfield Award from the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology, John Rydberg Gold Medal from the Scandinavian Federation of Heating, Ventilating and Sanitary Engineering Associations (SCANVAC), and Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA). He was awarded as an honorable member of the Society of Heating, Air-conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan (SHASE). Prof. Chen is a fellow of the ASHRAE, the International Society of Indoor Air Quality (ISIAQ), and the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM).
